exTANt is an audio tour of the labor history of the 8-acre Tannery Arts Center site along the banks of the San Lorenzo River. A collaboration between public historian Kathleen Aston and media artist Yulia Gilich. The project is designed as a locative sound installation accessible via a mobile phone app. It will function like an audio tour: participants’ GPS coordinates will trigger sound pieces associated with and encoded in specific locations within the Tannery campus grounds.

Through interviews with former Salz leather workers, current Tannery Arts Center residents, and Santa Cruz labor and environmental historians an audio tour will be created that will both refresh the existing historical interpretations and include additional sites throughout the campus, with a focus on the San Lorenzo River.

This project will enrich community collections through the development of relevant oral histories, activating existing collections at the Tannery Arts Center, the Museum of Art and History, and the Santa Cruz City Public Library.
