MAHA TAITANO

Apperception

Maha Taitano is a sculpture & installation artist working across mediums from metals, wood, fabrics, and papers to plastics. After attending Laney College, Oakland, 2004, she transferred to UC Santa Cruz in 2007 where she earned a BA in Visual Arts. She is currently attending Vermont College of the Fine Arts for her MFA in Visual Arts.

Maha’s work focuses on the subject of identities & the many-layered aspects & positionalities of intersectional modern culture. Currently, she is practising decolonizing her education as a female Pacific Islander & Arab artist living in Santa Cruz, CA. Pre-colonized, pre-modern religion, & indigenous matriarchal epistemologies from her multiple cultures, are guides for her subject matter & practice. The process & practice of creating & craft is of paramount importance to Maha, this value seen in her work through two aspects; multiples & repetition, and building & living in community.

Apperception will be on display in the Salz Lezin sculpture garden at the Tannery Arts Center, from November 2022.
