GAZELLE PARSONS

Gazelles's artwork addresses the complexities of life in the Anthropocene or the current period where human activities dominate the climate and environment. Combining 3D-modeled cardboard sculptures, gouache paintings, and folk art she creates eclectic habitats that highlight the relationships between self and environment.

“I take great care to ensure materials & processes used in my artmaking have the smallest environmental impact possible, I discover inventive techniques & creative methods to shape my vision. Make it interesting, make it funny, make it weird,” is the motto sung throughout Gazelle’s work. Her practice challenges what materials are acceptable in the creation of fine art while spotlighting how art-making can be less wasteful.

For this project, Gazelle will construct large, brightly painted fish out of upcycled materials that will hang at various locations on the Tannery Arts campus, leading participants on a tour of the campus.

This project celebrates and draws attention to the steelhead trout that call the waters of the San Lorenzo River home. Viewers will learn about these fascinating fish and their importance to the river ecosystem. Artist Gazelle Parsons will be giving out fish stickers at December First Friday event and for the WIner Art Market on December 10.
